If you think celebrating new year where you are is big, you should try a new year’s eve in the Netherlands! Last year I woke up and thought WW3 had started! You see, from 10am on new years eve, right through till 2am on new years day, it is perfectly acceptable for every human being in Holland to buy and let off explosives!!!!! And kids are no exception! We were lucky enough last year to experience 1st hand where all the noise was coming from when we joined everyone from our neighbourhood at one of the local farms for a spot of milk churn cannon blasting!
I love fireworks (especially the pretty quiet ones) but here in the NL it is all about the noise all day!
So what is milk churn cannon blasting? Simple really; take a piece of carbide, put it in the churn, add some water then close up the churn with its lid (or in our experience kids foot balls!) Then add heat by using a blow torch at the back of the milk churn and wait for the explosion!
As it blasts out of the cannon your whole body is rocked by the noise and if you miss the exact moment at which to make sure your ears are covered you are left with a ringing for some time.
Its fun….really….if you are a true Dutch person….which at this point i will defer against!
And lets not forget that fireworks are for everyone….including the kids.
Don’t forget the safety goggles! Right now my ponies seem to be grazing happily amongst the noise of cannons and firecrackers! Should anyone need a war-horse replacement feel free to contact me for my two!
Happy new year to you all, may you enjoy a peaceful and happy new year!
