It’s June, that can only mean one thing for Gouda…….the countdown to the 1st cheese market of the year, which will happen in a couple of weeks.
Every Thursday from mid June until the end of August; 10am – 12.30pm, this beautiful city plays host to this fascinating event. If you are looking for a day out that is uniquely Dutch look no further!
The market runs in the morning, during which you can watch the good-natured bartering between buyers and sellers of cheese. The deal is always sealed with a slapping of the hands and a firm shake. The process almost looks comic, which adds something to the experience.
The cheese buyers and sellers are joined on the square by many other individuals, all of whom have a unique part to play. All are very photogenic as well, and are more than happy to pose for pictures for you, or even with you, (obligatory standing holding a cheese picture of course!)
Unique to Gouda is the transport of cheese off the market square by horse and cart. The beautiful Fresian horses stand patiently while the cheeses are loaded, before moving off to deliver the cheese to tractor transport.
Don’t imagine for one moment that Gouda cheese is plain or boring! The whole of the city square is covered with market stalls on cheese market day, and you can buy your Gouda in any size or flavour. Right from the different ages of cheese through to the addition of truffles and herbs and colours; did you know that if you add basil flavouring, the cheese goes bright green? It’s only right to leave the market with at least a couple to try. There are several other cheese markets in Holland, take a look here for more info.
