A garden is an outdoor room – My visit to De Tuinen Van Appeltern

A little gem, hidden away in the heart of the Dutch countryside (that i had no idea about for 2 years) is De Tuinen Van Appeltern. Billed as the Netherlands largest garden idea park, it is simply the most amazing set of gardens I have ever set my eyes upon.

Before we even got through the entrance I was wowed by the colours and patterns.df7_3786lowres

Before we even got through the entrance I was wowed by the colours and patterns.

Now, I always wanted to get to Chelsea flower show, but having been to Appeltern, I think i will save myself the trip. After 4 hours wandering around and photographing the gardens I didn’t even see half of them. A return trip is definitely on the cards.

If like me you have a garden that you just about manage to stay in control of, some of these gardens will fill you with inspiration to take home….others, well I just wanted to grab a book and a cup of tea and settle down for the day in them!

I tried to capture the big picture, the details and the feel of the place. The colours, textures, patters, smells and sounds were amazing. So let me take you on a little journey through paradise!

The textures and patterns I saw ranged from grass against sky, against path and this amazing shadow thrown by a seat.

The gardens look like little rooms. All individually designed for a completely different feel in each. This was the zen inspired one!

I love the turquoise colours and the interesting idea of a glass wall.

I just wanted to pick this one up and take it home – the colours were amazing. I even photographed the floor for future texture work!

This one reminded me of New Zealand with the ferns and board walk

I loved the textures of this.

This was the most perfect English country garden

Who would have though painted corrugated iron could look creative!

Unique table decoration

The sun on these lily pads and the water droplets on the surface of them created a beautiful pattern.

Then of course the colours of the flowers – this one made me think of Horton Hears a Hoo and if the families in Hooville were all living on each flower!

Seeing the terracotta walls and these flowers brought back memories of Greece.

The Dutch love their hydrangeas – I’m quite a fan too when they look like this.

Simple sweet peas – I introduced my Bulgarian and Slovenian friends to this very English flower.

Nearly last in the tour the insect life! These bees were busy on the lavender.

Reflections in a puddle – This is one of my favourite photos of the day – it’s just a bit different but i can imagine seeing it on a canvas on my wall!

I could have posted so many more, but hopefully this has given you a taste of this AMAZING place in the Netherlands – another one to add to my visitor recommendations!
